On Saturday, May 9th, Mothers for Justice United organized a march to the Department of Justice, demanding answers and action from the Department regarding systemic corruption, racism and inequality. Mothers for Justice United was started by Maria Hamilton last year when her son Dontre was beaten with a baton and then shot 14 times for resting on a park bench in Milwaukee. The officer who killed him has not been tried for murder. Maria was joined by several other mothers who lost children to police brutality and neighborhood violence. Hearing the list of demands and seeing the strength of these mothers as they shared their stories was among the most powerful experiences in my activism career.
